MONTIS
MONTIS – Associação para a Gestão e Conservação da Natureza is a nature conservation NGO based in Vouzela, Portugal, and founded in 2014, with the goals of bringing management to abandoned lands through the support of natural processes, nature-based solutions (natural engineering techniques), to restore autochthonous species, to bring resilience towards forest fires and to create biodiversity value.
The association has around 400 active members and manages 300 ha, mainly in the centre of Portugal, from which 17,3 ha belong to the association (acquired through crowdfunding campaigns and donations). The rest are stewardship agreements with the owners.
Throughout the years, MONTIS has worked towards engaging the communities in nature conservation activities, demonstrating that with little actions and resources, it is possible to reconnect people with the landscape and to give a hand to nature. Since 2014, the association has developed several volunteering activities, such as short-term volunteering (community days, academic weekends, corporate volunteering, workcamps) and long-term volunteering (ESC projects and a preparatory LIFE Project), involving around 5000 short-term volunteers and around 100 long-term volunteers.
