Dear supporters of wetlands and wetland conservation,
we are very happy to inform you that thanks to 1077 donors, we have managed to raise the target amount to save 42 hectares of wetlands in the agricultural country – 100 000 €. Thanks to two large donations at the end of the campaign, we even managed to exceed this amount and successfully raised a total 106 475 €. Therefore we are able to buy an additional 1.6 hectares of land in the adjacent vicinity of Natura 2000 site Čiližské wetlands, which is currently a waterlogged field, turn this area into a wetland as well and protect together in total 43.6 hectares of wetlands! 👏 Now, we can ensure permanent wetland protection on the ground and on paper. From the position of the owner, we have already taken such steps and have applied to the State Nature Conservancy of the Slovak Republic for the inclusion of the area in the Natura 2000 network of protected areas as part of the Čiližské močiare Site of European Importance.
Supporting a 42-hectare wetland in an agricultural country may sound abstract. Let’s take a closer look at what exactly you have supported with your financial contribution to save the wetland:
- Disappearing habitat of sedge and reed meadows in the Danube lowlands, where, among other species, lives a rare endemic and Ice Age relict – The Central European root vole (Microtus oeconomus mehelyi),
- nesting site for undisturbed breeding and their successful hatchling of rare bird species such as The northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus), The western marsh harrier (Circus aeruginosus), e.i.
- a natural climate “cooler” (a place buzzing with life, even at 34°C in summer),
- Water retention solution par excellence – retaining up to 70,000,000 liters of water at a time (during a rainfall),
- a place for biodiversity of diverse aquatic and soil invertebrates,
- a place for the successful development of many amphibians
- a place for pollinators in the middle of a deserted agricultural country.
