As European public nature conservation programmes remain chronically underfunded, private philanthropic funding is a crucial contribution to battling the climate emergency and biodiversity loss.

However, cross-border philanthropy in the EU faces legal and administrative hurdles that create a prohibitive and disincentivising environment for donors who want to support European nature outside of the their country of residence.
