THE CONSERVATION FINANCE BOOT CAMP EXPERIENCE

Organised annually by the US-based Conservation Finance Network, this unique training brings together leaders from the private sector, charitable foundations, public agencies, conservation organisations, and academic institutions. It’s more than just a learning experience—it’s a platform for building partnerships and sharing groundbreaking ideas. In 2023, the first European Conservation Finance Boot Camp took place in Italy, marking an exciting step forward for European conservation finance.

 

Why it matters

The challenges are vast, from climate change adaptation to restoring biodiversity. Solving these monumental problems requires the conservation sector to work with the private sector. Yet Europe’s conservation sector has traditionally relied on public funding, but this model leaves much of the available capital untapped.

Many NGOs face financial strain as EU funding instruments require significant co-financing, often leading to budget gaps and unsustainable practices. The European Commission actively encourages NGOs to engage the private sector as co-investors in conservation efforts, but bridging this gap requires fresh strategies and bold thinking.
