Continuing the current momentum for European peatlands action, the Bundesamt für Naturschutz, Greifswald Mire Centre, and Eurosite organised the European Peatlands Strategy 2-day workshop in Bonn, Germany (27-28 May 2024), which gathered experts, policymakers, the UNEP Global Peatland Initiative and over 30 government representatives from EU Member States and other European countries to exchange on national peatland strategies and explore opportunities for a comprehensive European Peatland Initiative–an educational event with highly engaged participants.

This workshop was built upon a similar event organised in 2019, resulting in a policy brief that supported the German National Peatland Strategy. The objectives included fostering dialogue among European policymakers to share experiences with existing and planned national peatland strategies and discussing the integration of strategic peatland conservation at the European level. Participants also reviewed current practices, regulations, and opportunities for enhanced cooperation between countries to advance the goals of the European Peatland Initiative.
