Life Ambition 2004-2008
Endangered amphibians
From time immemorial, small-scale man-made landscapes - consisting of pools, hedges, overgrown, dry, insect-rich areas and forgotten patches - have been the natural habitats of the great crested newt, the yellow-bellied toad, the midwife toad, the European tree frog and the common spadefoot toad in the Netherlands. These five species of amphibians are now rare.
Life-Ambition (Amphibian Biotope Improvement in the Netherlands) is focused on the restoration and enlargement of habitats, as well as creating sustainable ecological corridors between the habitats of these five species of amphibians. They are on the red list of protected species and fall under the Habitats Directive. Also, on a European scale, the amphibians are of great value in terms of biodiversity.
The European Life-Ambition Project has created and /or restored hundreds of spawning waters and adjacent land biotopes and provided a vital boost for these endangered amphibians.
