OBJECTIVE OF THE CONSULTATION

The Integrated Maritime Policy (IMP), introduced in 2007, aims to help Europe realise the potential of its marine and coastal resources. It does this by providing a framework for coordination of the different domains, functions and users of the seas and oceans and promoting excellence in marine research, technology and innovation.

Ocean energy (mostly generated from tides and waves at the present time) is a potential source of jobs and growth in Europe. However, its development has faced challenges. This consultation aims at gathering opinions and ideas from individuals and stakeholders on whether and how to help the sector make its contribution to security of energy supply in Europe and meeting targets for a 'green' future.

This consultation does not concern off-shore wind energy which is considered to be at a different stage of development, with major installations planned, under construction or already producing electricity.
