Eurosite Marine & Coastal Protected Areas Working Group
The Eurosite Marine and Coastal Protected Areas Working Group is a new initiative of the Eurosite network supported by Conservatoire du Littoral and Aires Marines Protégées (AMP), with the contribution of l’Atelier Technique des Espaces Naturels (ATEN).
History:
During the Eurosite Annual Conferences, which were held in Turku (Finland, 2008) and in Valencia (Spain, 2009), the request to develop Eurosite activities focussing on coastal and marine protected areas was responded to on several occasions. Some of the French Eurosite members, such as Conservatoire du Littoral, Aires Marines Protégées (AMP) and ATEN expressed their willingness to develop a new initiative dedicated to the creation of a Eurosite marine and coastal network through the Eurosite programme of activities.
Aim:
The Eurosite Marine & Coastal Protected Areas Working Group's aim is the development of a marine and coastal program of work over three years, covering 2010, 2011 and 2012. This will be done by organizing annual workshops on marine and coastal protected areas management and by working on tools for the coastal and marine management plans, in particular for the Natura 2000 marine sites.
Products:
- European good practice case studies;
- A network of experts and site managers;
- Tools to develop and products to deliver towards 2013 (IMPACT 3);
- Links with formal EU marine process.
Workshops:
The workshops are designed to share good practice and to exchange ideas between site management organisations from different European countries and ensure the delivery of a successful network of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The workshops are planned purposefully in three EU marine regions: the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the North Sea. Taking place in three marine regions, the workshops have a special focus on their regional characteristics, illustrated through sea trips, but the objective is to enrich the exchange of good practice by views stemming from other EU marine regions.
Workshop 1: "Marine & Coastal Conservation: Natura 2000 Management Planning" (Marseille, France, 1-3 September 2010)The workshop focused on supporting site managers in designing and implementing management plans in marine and coastal areas, with particular attention given to the requirements of Natura 2000 marine areas and the links between land and sea. More than 100 participants (site managers and stakeholders) registered on-line, representing 15 countries and 3 European meta marine regions. Speakers from all over Europe presented local case studies, European technical support and funding opportunities. On behalf of all participants, Eurosite extends formal thanks to the Agence des aires marines protégées, Conservatoire du Littoral, Atelier Technique des Espaces Naturels, Ville de Marseille, for the generous support provided in hosting this workshop and to UNEP CAR/SPA and GIP Calanques for their technical support and participation.
