From time immemorial, small-scale man-made landscapes - consisting of pools, hedges, overgrown, dry, insect-rich areas and forgotten patches - have been the natural habitats of the great crested newt, the yellow-bellied toad, the midwife toad, the European tree frog and the common spadefoot toad in the Netherlands. These five species of amphibians are now rare.
