2007 - 2008 Preparation of an Action Plan for the Eurasian Spoonbill

The Eurosite Spoonbill Working Group has been active for many years along the Eurasian and African migratory route of the Spoonbill. The African-Eurasian Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) tasked Eurosite with the production of an action plan for the Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia, subspecies – leucorodia, major, archeri and balsaci,). This action plan will be especially useful for populations of the Central European Flyway, which are more vulnerable to threats and in relative terms a less well known species.

Technical and scientific input is provided by Syndicat Mixte Baie de Somme (SMBS), in collaboration with other representatives of the Eurosite Spoonbill Working Group. The African-Eurasian Waterbirds Agreement (AEWA) covers 118 countries - the European Community, parts of Asia and Canada, the Middle East and Africa. The AEWA covers 235 species of birds ecologically dependent on wetlands for at least part of their annual cycle. Parties to the Agreement is called upon to engage in a wide range of conservation actions, which are described in a comprehensive Action Plan.
