1. Background: ↑ page top
Twinning partners:
- Odra Delta Nature Park (EUCC, Poland)
- Groningen / Noord-Drenthe, (Natuurmonumenten, the Netherlands)
Twinning status:
A Eurosite Twinning agreement was signed by the partners in September 2010.
Twinning period:
2010 - 2014
Partner details and rationale:
On the 15th of September 2010 the Eurosite Twinning agreement between Oder Delta and District Drenthe-Noord has been signed in Dunblane (UK). The document states that both partners will co-operate in the years to come on a range of subjects. Besides exchange of knowledge there will also be the opportunity for exchange of staff and realization of mutual projects. The work plan should specify the details for the mutual efforts for the coming years. The signing is the result of the mutual contacts which exist already several years.
Since 1998 Society for The Coast is working together with Natuurmonumenten and having the opportunity to get much input from the experience of a “bigger brother”. Several projects and actions have been realised together and there are quite a lot of possibilities to continue this a real fruitful cooperation.
Since now the best results have been from the common initiative “Odra Delta Nature Park as a path to sustainable development”, in which Natuurmonumenten and the Society for The Coast as well as EUCC- Coastal & Marine Union created a Park covering nearly 4000 ha located in the region of Odra delta (Westpomerania Province, Poland). We like to thank for the support from the Dutch Government (a PINMATRA Project). Not only the area of the Park has been realised and established, but also a model concept of local inhabitants, new ways of sustainable development and many other connected activities were undertaken.
Actually both partners are looking forward to find new platforms of cooperation and established a kind of “action plan” for the next years.
2. Twinning themes / goals / activities: ↑ page top
The twinning has the following objectives:
- Exchange of experience and knowledge relating to planning and implementing nature conservation and management (especially within the European Natura 2000 network) and protection of natural resources and environment;
- Sharing experience and joint implementation of projects in the field of nature and environmental in nature areas;
- Improvement of active nature conservation methods in the light of migration birds (chosen species) needs;
- Improvements of local inhabitants involvements in active nature conservation, as the way to sustainable development;
- Development of staff in the organizations.
Activities in the framework of the twinning:
The following activities will be undertaken within the framework of the cooperation (within the financial and personal opportunities):
- Mutual exchange of information on themes of interest for the various parties;
- Mutual visits and staff exchange;
- Joint actions under the themes of interest;
- Joint effort to launch and implement projects and acquisition of resources - in particular from European funds and private funds.
3. Results and progress: ↑ page top
Due to personal circumstances the project had a slow start in 2011.
4. Annual planning 2012 ↑ page top
The goals for the coming months are:
- An exchange visit from Natuurmonumenten to Oderdelta NP in May 2012. Experts from the Netherlands will execute another 2 bird inventories of the most important area in the Nature Park to follow up earlier monitoring activities;
- In 2012 partners will work on a leaflet (A5-format) with general information about the twinning. This first leaflet will be followed by other leaflets focused on certain themes in the next years;
- WE Young People project: In co-operation with Eurosite there is an exchange programme for schools between the Netherlands and Poland. In 2012 there will be an exchange between schools in Roosendaal and Stettin. Pupils will travel to the other country and learn to experience and admire nature by means of photography;
- The partners are preparing a study project for students related to the socio-historic background of the inhabitants of both areas (mediation by Roelof Heringa).
The study project in a nutshell:
Background: Each country has its own history which determines the relation of man towards their living environment, country or nature. The history of Poland is exceptional in that sense and not comparable with the Netherlands. The German and Sovjet past have resulted in a continuous stream of new inhabitants. The present inhabitants of the Oder Delta area and the surrounding area of Stettin don’t have hardly any connection with their environment. How to connect these people at “heart-level” to their surrounding and in particular with nature in and around the Odra Delta Nature Park?
Eurosite Twinning is looking for one or more student to investigate this question.
Aim:
The aim of the research is to find an answer to the question to which extent history, culture and nationality have been determined for the relation people have (or do not have) towards their surrounding area, and nature in particular.
This research will take place by comparison of two situations – Odra Delta Nature Park and Regio Groningen-Drenthe – both with a different history and culture.
A follow-up question is how to develop and strengthen this relation? The difference between Netherlands and Poland might give new insights in this matter.

Twinning Partner 2:
Groningen / Noord-Drenthe (Natuurmonumenten, the Netherlands)
Natuurmonumenten:
Natuurmonumenten has been working for better nature for more than 105 years. Natuurmonumenten literally means “natural monuments”. Natuurmonumenten is an independent organisation which preserves nature, landscape and cultural history in the Netherlands. For this purpose Natuurmonumenten purchases, manages and protects nature reserves with environmental value.
We work continuously on the expanding of our areas in a constructive cooperation with other parties.
Natuurmonumenten protects and manages approximately 102,000 hectares spread over 355 nature reserves and 955 monumental buildings [2009].
An important issue for Natuurmonumenten is to involve people and to connect them to nature and Natuurmonumenten.
The management unit ‘Groningen Noord-Drenthe’ manages approx. 3000 hectares valuable nature reserves in the province Groningen and the northern part of Drenthe. These nature areas fulfil their function as a nature reserve and are part of the National Ecological Network, as well as an important social role for recreation, the water management in the northern Netherlands and the preservation of the typical landscape for this area. Water and water dynamics play an qualifying role. Especially in the brook-valleys and the development of so-called Climate buffers (water retention areas) in particular.
