Conflict management in the Natura 2000 Network

The one-day facilitated workshop 'Dealing with conflicts in the implementation and management of the Natura 2000 network - best practices at the local / site level' took place in Brussels on the 18th of June.

The project, delivered on behalf of the European Commission, is led by ALTERRA (Wageningen UR, The Netherlands) with the partnership of Eurosite (Den Bosch, The Netherlands) and ECNC (Tilburg, the Netherlands).

The presentations delivered during the course of this workshop are available for download at the base of this page.

Scope and Ambition of the Workshop

This one-day, “facilitated” workshop aimed to review the current practices of implementation of Natura 2000 and the lessons learned from the perspectives of the various stakeholders in Europe.

The workshop brought together a range of stakeholders in the policy and practice of implementation and development of Natura 2000, represented by organisations operating at the European level.

The outcomes of the workshop will be part of the recommendation guideline.

Context

This is the first workshop of a series of four workshops. Three regional workshops will follow this 'Europe-wide' event, which will address regional issues with the implementation and management of Natura 2000.

The central aim of the project is to promote best practices for implementation and management. Attention is focused on a balance between multiple uses and multiple interests in Natura 2000 sites in order to ensure both the engagement of the regional population and the respect of the values of the site.

Specific objectives of this project include:

  • Assess the current situation;
  • Identify and review good examples;
  • Contribute to transposition of lessons learned.
